The goals for any project should be laid out at the beginning of the process so that no matter what happens, everyone is focused on the goal ahead. For web performance engineering there are a few goals that take precedence during the process. Establishing goals is one of the key components for successful web performance engineering.
IT departments and teams can roam around aimlessly if common goals have not been established for web performance engineering. While some areas of an IT department may focus on one part, another area of an IT department may have a different focus. The entire team should come together to establish main goals so that the team can work together, even if indirectly, in order to achieve success with web performance engineering.
A goal for web performance engineering can be to create higher sales for the company. Web performance engineering can help a company do this by making sure that all sales transactions go through successfully for users. The goal would be to have 100% success for all the transactions that go through the website resulting in more sales and profits for the company.
Many users would rather spend their limited time on websites that run quickly and successfully complete transactions. A website that can achieve both of these things can help a company gain a competitive advantage in the area of web performance engineering. Customer satisfaction, thanks to web performance engineering, can result in higher customer loyalty rates which is a great advantage for companies that can achieve this. A company can focus on gaining more of a competitive advantage with web performance engineering, especially if the website does not necessarily rely on the number of successful transactions or sales, but instead on the number of visitors to the website.
A goal associated with web performance engineering can be lowering costs for the company. If there are less problems associated with the website due to better or increased web performance engineering then the company will have to spend less money on a large customer support department because not as many people will have to report problems to the site if there aren't any!
There are some obstacles that can drive the group away from the designated goals of web performance engineering. If the group or team is not fully educated on the whole process and specifics of web performance engineering then it can be difficult for everyone to work toward the same goals. Also, if the team does not have the right tools to work with then web performance engineering can be difficult.
Lay out the goals of web performance engineering before any work is completed. All members of the IT department or team should be working towards the same goals in regard to web performance engineering. Choose the goals that will work best for the company and what the company is trying to achieve and line up the goals of web performance engineering to obtain the best results.
