    What's a probe?

At the core of the Are We Up? web monitoring application is the concept of a probe. How it works

    • Global Web Monitoring - The Are We Up? application uses our global web monitoring infrastructure to monitor the health of your web application from various locations around the world.

    • Probe Execution - When your probe is ready to run our monitoring technology interprets your probe's configuration and executes the web request. Your probe will be monitored every 5, 10, or 15 minutes based upon the probe frequency you have chosen.

    • Problem Detection - If a problem is detected, error code received, or timeout occurs, your probe will be marked as "down". When your probe is marked "down", we continuously re-execute your probe's configuration until the problem is fixed and the web application recovers.

    • Alerts - When your probe encounters a problem and is marked "down", alerts will be generated based upon the alerting configuration for your probe. You can configure up to two email, text message and phone call alerts per probe.

    • Recovery - When the problem is fixed and your web application recovers, our system generates a recovery email to the email recipients configured for the probe. You do not receive recovery text message or phone calls.

    Refreshing Data

The Are We Up? web monitoring application relies heavily on network connectivity. When probe configuration changes are made we attempt to persist the changes with our remote servers to ensure they take effect immediately. Additionally, we want to provide you with the latest realtime data. The toolbar, which is located at the bottom of the probes view, provides vital information about your updates. The toolbar also contains a button that you can press to retrieve the most recent data.

    Refresh Button
When you make probe configuration changes, the application will attempt to persist those changes with our remote servers automatically. In the event a network error is encountered, you will be informed that a manual refresh is required. The refresh button provides you a means to manually "push" your changes up to our servers. Likewise, the button is used to retrieve the latest results.

    Updated Status
If the last refresh, automated or manual, was successful, the updated status will provide you the date and time of the latest refresh.

    Refresh Required
The "Are We Up?" application checks to ensure our servers and Apple's servers are reachable from your iPhone or iTouch. Although your device may indicate it has connectivity to a network, there indeed may be problems with the devices ability to "reach" the remote servers. When our application detects this condition or encounters any other type of communication problem, we alert you through a pop up message. Additionally, we provide a "Refresh Required" message in the toolbar. This message indicates you should press the refresh button to manually refresh data.
